Voice
My singing experience has helped me to develop an appreciation for a wide variety of musical genres from folk songs to art songs and from jazz to opera. My teaching is centered around the firm belief that music in the vast majority of styles can be sung both expressively and in a way that protects and promotes vocal health. Really, both are important – I mean what singer doesn't want to have such solid technique that his or her voice lasts a lifetime? Then again, who would want flawless technique at the expense of individuality and expressiveness? The good news is that healthy singing actually can free a singer to be more expressive!

I also like to remind my students that as singers, their bodies are their instruments, and deserve the same care as a violin or a trumpet. A little time in each lesson is spent focusing on ways that we can take care of our voices by taking care of ourselves.

Theory and Ear Training
Growing up singing around the campfire, I never imagined that I'd one day be able to see a bunch of lines and dots on a printed page and turn it into a song. Now, I love being able to teach myself a new piece of music! For those who are interested, I can teach you what the notes and other symbols on a piece of sheet music actually mean. I can also teach you to "sight read", or sing a simple melody the first time you see the printed music, without someone playing along! I'd incorporate this training into your voice lessons, either lengthening the time of our weekly sessions, or adding another session every week or two.

My Philosophy
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, my teaching is centered around the belief that each student is an individual. Everyone I work with will have different needs, talents, and interests. They'll have a wide range and variety of musical training and experiences. Every one of them will have a different way of learning, and learn at his or her own pace. By focusing on the individual, I hope to make lessons both challenging and fun for each of my students.
